The BREEJ hypothesis disagrees with the widely held and published view that “ingrown hairs” are caused by wiry, curly hairs that curl and grow back into the skin”.
This concept of “ingrown hairs” has led to use of tweezers to pull out the so called ingrown hairs further aggravating the problem as the additional trauma can lead to infection, hyper pigmentation and significant skin damage.
BREEJ postulated that “Shaving Bumps are Primarily caused by Trauma from Shaving, resulting in inflammation of the shaved area manifested as “bumps” as the body reacts to the trauma.
Induction of Melanogenesis by irritated Keratinocytes in response to the Trauma from Shaving results in the production of additional Inflammatory Mediators by melanocytes, melanosomes and melanin further exacerbating the condition [this is the main reason why men of color with higher Melanocytes activity, greater number of melanosomes and higher melanin content have a higher incidence of shaving bumps]”
